CORNEAL REFRACTIVE THERAPY | ORTHOKERATOLOGY | MYOPIA CONTROL ATROPINE TREATMENT
Orthokeratology or Corneal Refractive Therapy refers to the use of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses to temporarily reshape the cornea (the clear layer on the front of the eye), allowing you to see clearly without the use of glasses or contact lenses during you waking hours. The orthokeratogy contact lenses must be worn on a regular basis during sleep in order to reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia is a very common eye health condition. It is often called "short-sighted or near-sighted." A person with myopia can see clearly up close, but has blurry vision when looking at objects in the distance.
Myopia happens when the normal eye grows too long from front to back. Light rays have trouble reaching the right spot on the back of the eye (the retina) to achieve clear distance vision.
Myopia Facts
The number of persons with myopia is growing at an alarming rate around the world. The younger the person develops myopia, the great the risk of serious eye conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts and even blindness.
In the US, the prevalence of nearsightedness (myopia) has increased 66% since 1971.
Myopia is a rapidly increasing epidemic. It is estimated that 50% of the world will be myopic by the year 2050 based on current trends.
Myopia usually begins in childhood at school age (six years and onwards) and can worsen until early adult years.
What Causes Myopia?
* Myopia can be inherited from one generation to the next. If a parent or two wear glasses, chances are their offspring will too.
* Lack of time spent outdoors in direct sun light has been linked to the development of myopia.
* Spending more time on digital devices can also contribute to a child's myopia.
